Toronto Raptors Jersey Redesign

In October 2020, after the release of the new uniforms for the Toronto Raptors. Some did not like the new redesign (Including myself) so I decided to solve a few of the problems the new designs featured.

Just to clarify, this redesign is not to diminish any of the work the jersey designers have done. I understand that the designers for the Raptors probably had a few constraints for the project!

BACKGROUND

The Toronto Raptors are a Canadian professional basketball team based in Toronto. The team competes in the National Basketball Association as a member of the league's Eastern Conference Atlantic Division.

EVOLUTION OF THEIR JERSEYS

Since 1995 to present day, the Raptors have had numerous jersey changes.

THE CHEVRON

The Raptors have used chevrons in their jerseys since 2008. The chevrons stayed on the sides of the jerseys up until 2017 where the team introduced a full chevron design jersey on OVO night. Since then, there has been a new iteration of the chevron design every year except 2019.

PRESENT DAY

The Raptors recently released 3 new jerseys for the 2020-2021 NBA Season. This new set of jerseys consisted of the well-known chevron design talked about in the previous section.

Although the design was not entirely new, there was one design decison that many fans did not agree with and that was the thick strokes around the letters & numbers

MY SOLUTION

The chevron being the main design element of the jersey was not something many were happy with. On top of that, the stroke around the letters and numbers was not working with the jersey too well.

As a designer, the decision to add the strokes was fair and understandable as it improved legibility on the black and red colours.

My goal was to focus on legibility and the overall aesthetic. Also making sure that one doesn't get sacrificed for the other.

"SPECIAL" JERSEYS

In 2017, Nike tookover the production of NBA jerseys and till then, they have introduced two new types of jerseys. The City jerseys commemorated the NBA teams' city history and pride. While the Earned jerseys were given to teams to qualified in the previous seasons playoffs.

OVO JERSEYS

For the past three years (soon to be four), the Raptors and OVO (October’s Very Own) have been teaming up to promote the “Welcome Toronto” campaign. The goal is to “work with local communities and the City of Toronto to inspire the next generation of leaders,” and to “ignite the culture of our game in our city.”

The jerseys features a popular black and gold colour scheme which has been used in past iterations.

2020/21 VERSIONS

The Raptors have yet to release the City jerseys for this upcoming season. WIth no reference or anything to improve upon, I decided to take the wheel and experiment with different versions.

These iterations consistent of old and new designs used on Raptors jerseys to spice it up.

EARNED EDITION

Nike’s first introduction to the Earned jersey was in 2018 where the Raptors had a jersey that had a similar design to the new lineup. It was primarily red with a white chevron that said “NORTH” with the players number underneath in white also.

2020/2021 VERSIONS

Same as the City jerseys, the Raptors have yet to release their Earned jerseys for upcoming season. WIth no reference or anything to improve upon, I decided to take the wheel and experiment with different versions.

HAVING SOME FUN

I am a sucker for monochrome jerseys. I figured why not have some fun with these new designs with some black, white and grey.

These also could be a cool concept for workout/practice jerseys.
